Juliette Eames, one of our Braiders, is running a startup that's designed to keep family stories alive. Read about her story and her why below!
How would you describe yourself in 10 words or less?
I’m passionate about life and finding all that’s good around me.
Tell us about the brand that you are hoping to grow.We sell customizable children’s stories about your family’s ancestors. Children can learn from a storybook about characters and figures of the past who are in their family tree. Through these books, we hope that children will learn about more about themselves and where they came from.
My brand revolves around families. I hope that when people see my product they immediately think of someone in their family who they care about, and so far that has been the reaction. I want moms to think of their children, siblings to think of each other, and children to think of their parents. The beauty of this brand is that it enables you to and it engenders feelings of affection and admiration for those that came before you.
What inspired you to start?
My husband Wesley and my Grandma Estelle have both inspired me to start my customized family storybook business. I would not have started this without my husband’s contagious entrepreneurial spirit.
Wesley’s company Trace.com launched in 2014 and since then he has wanted to share his passion for creation and entrepreneurship with me. After our son was born last year, I decided to stay at home and start something that I can do while still devoting much of my time to being a mom. My husband encouraged me to create a product around one of my passions, so I picked family stories. The fun part is that our companies go hand in hand because they are centered around family history. My product is tailored to a different demographic but it is accomplishing a very similar goal by connecting generations.
I have a close relationship with my grandma so thinking about the day that my children and I will not have her in our lives saddens me. To remember my grandma, I hired an illustrator to create artwork depicting her life story (written by me in rhyme) for my son Isaac. Right now, Isaac is too young to understand and love the book, but the older nieces and nephews I’ve shared it with really enjoy reading their great-grandma’s story.
If you have a mission, goal, or vision for your brand, what would it be?
I want to help people explore their family tree through stories. I hope that children will learn about their heritage in a fun and entertaining way and that parents or family members that read children these stories will feel a closeness to their children and their forebears.
Who is your target audience?
Our target audience is mainly parents with children and grandparents with grandchildren ages 0-12.
What are some of the biggest challenges that you’ve experienced so far with your product?Creating a customized product that appeals to a wide variety of people has been a challenge for me. Business is moving slowly right now but I’m hoping to pick up momentum during the holiday season.
Your biggest successes?
My biggest success is seeing the excitement from customers who buy the books because they want to share their family stories (especially stories about loved ones who have passed on) with their children and grandchildren. Knowing that lives are being remembered and cherished through these books is so fulfilling for me.
What do you hope to learn at the Braid Workshops?
I hope to learn how to create a great product and to find ways to make that product available to a wider audience.
Who do you hope to meet at the Braid Workshops?
I hope to meet fellow female founders and women whose husbands are entrepreneurs. The startup world needs more community and sisterhood.
