How would you describe yourself in 10 words or less?
Yoga instructor, wellness enthusiast, writer, creator, people lover.
Tell us about the brand that you are hoping to grow:
Allie Barnes Yoga. I currently teach yoga locally a couple times a week, and I’m working on writing more about yoga and other wellness topics on my blog (alliebarnesyoga.com) and Instagram (@alliebarnesyoga). I would love to write more for other blogs and publications. I’ve also taught classes on natural home remedies at Harmony, a wonderful fabric/yarn/gift boutique in downtown Provo, and I’ve love to keep teaching there and at other venues.
What inspired you to start?
I noticed how different I felt when I was teaching yoga than when I was working full time as a caseworker (social worker). I'd finish teaching a yoga class and feel so excited and energized, whereas I'd commute home from a stressful day at the office and feel so drained, just wanting to lounge and watch Netflix all night. So I left my job as a caseworker and when I made that decision, things felt so much better. There’s a lot more uncertainty and the work required of me building my own business is very different, but my heart feels more at peace here, doing what I love, than it did before. I also want to mention, I was inspired by a friend of mine pursuing his own dreams. Being around that hopeful energy, it felt like anything was possible. I’m grateful for that example and his encouragement in my pursuits.
If you have a mission, goal, or vision for your brand, what would it be?
To help people feel good, connect to their bodies, still their minds, and learn to feel peace.
Who is your target audience?
I will be the first to admit, as a yoga instructor, I am most comfortable teaching adults—students, young adults, parents, working professionals—and so I do! I currently teach at the Startup Building and with BYU Women’s Services and Resources. While my class at the Startup Building is open to the public (first class free, other classes $5!), employees of the building and students at DevMountain attend for free—so a lot of entrepreneurs and young professionals attend my classes. My BYU classes are mostly attended by students of the university.
What are some of the biggest challenges that you’ve experienced so far with your brand?
It’s hard when I feel so passionate about yoga and wellness, and I create events or classes, and the turnout isn’t what I expect it to be. And that’s okay! I was told to expect this as I begin to build my business.
What are some of your biggest successes?
I’m really proud of how I’m refining my business plan. Recently, I’ve let go of some opportunities that I decided weren’t in line with my goals. That has helped me focus on what feels right for my business. I’ve also been thinking about how I used to love writing but haven’t done much of it in recent years—so I’ve started writing more again. As I’ve made these changes and continue to try new things with my business, I’ve become more confident in myself, in the way I teach, and in the things I share.
What do you hope to learn at the Braid Workshops?
I’m new at building my business, so I could really use any guidance! But what comes to mind is marketing. I love creating things—whether it be a yoga class, a wellness workshop, an essay, or anything—but I don’t always know how to effectively get the word out. I appreciated the January Braid Workshop with the social media panel for this reason, and I look forward to learning more in future workshops!
Who do you hope to meet at the Braid Workshops?
I’d love to meet people who also care about wellness topics, and possibly collaborate with them!
