How would you describe yourself in 10 words or less?
Creative, professional, kind, passionate about building communities and promoting social justice.
Tell us about the brand that you are hoping to grow.
After working for a few years in the video production industry, I'm now trying to build up my freelance makeup artistry business focused on makeup for advertising, commercial work, film and fashion.
What inspired you to start?
Most of my playtime during childhood was spent creating–whether it was building a toad "habitat" from Popsicle sticks and gravel, making chalk drawings for my mom, or writing and illustrating short stories. As I grew older I developed a love for painting and illustration and kept that as a hobby. I studied marketing in college and went on to work with a creative agency in Salt Lake. I interacted with makeup artists from time to time on set at my job, and in doing so I soon realized that makeup artistry is just painting on a new type of canvas. I started learning on my own in October 2015, went through a 200 hour makeup artistry certification course in February-March 2016, and now I'm working on building my freelance business.
If you have a mission, goal, or vision for your brand, what would it be?
I'm still working on coming up with a broader vision, but I want my brand to be a representation of makeup as an art and a trade, not simply a silly girly thing that Instagram-famous young women do for likes. I want my brand to show that I take my work seriously, and that I understand that the makeup I do for my clients will bring together the entire story they’re trying to tell with their commercial or photograph.
Who is your target audience?
My target audience is anyone working in the creative side of the advertising world. Specifically I’m looking to work consistently with creative directors at video production companies (who would hire me for makeup for video ads), art directors or photographers at creative agencies or magazines (who would hire me for makeup on either print or video ads, promotions, or editorials), and marketing directors at consumer companies (who might hire me directly to do makeup for an ad campaign).
What’s the biggest challenge and biggest success that you’ve experienced so far with your brand?
The biggest challenge so far has probably been fighting self-doubt and learning how to cut through the noise. Makeup artistry isn’t licensed in Utah, so with the rise of beauty trends there are many more “makeup artists” popping up every day, and it's tough to figure out how to differentiate yourself.
What do you hope to learn at the Braid Workshops?
I'm working on creating my own brand right now, so I'd love to get more insight and feedback on things like my logo and website design.
Who do you hope to meet at the Braid Workshops?
More than anything I'm just interested in meeting and interacting with other women who are self-employed or working on building their businesses. I think there's a lot we can learn from each other and there are unique ways we can support one another that you can't find in other places. Like I said, I'm passionate about participating in and building communities, so I love that a community like Braid exists.
